Of all the numeric milestones in a human life, the one-billion-second mark may be the most universally striking. In practice, this means atomic clocks are accurate to within about one second over 300 million years. Time perception and why seconds feel unequal

Human perception of time is profoundly non-linear. A well-documented phenomenon called "telescoping" causes recent events to feel closer than they are, while distant events feel further away. New experiences register as longer in retrospect because more new memories are formed; familiar routines compress in memory because they produce fewer distinct recollections. This is one explanation for why time appears to accelerate as you age — not because it actually moves faster, but because a smaller proportion of each year contains genuinely new experience.
